Rodri to Barcelona is official. The World Cup-winning captain and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has completed his move from Manchester City in a deal worth up to €76.5m, choosing the Catalan giants over a strong push from Real Madrid, a decision that stunned plenty of neutrals given his roots in the Spanish capital.
“It’s a dream to be here,” Rodri told reporters after landing in Barcelona. “I am looking forward to working with my teammates and giving my best to win it all. We will go for the Champions League and for every title.”
Why Barcelona Won the Race
Real Madrid had been linked with Rodri for over a year, but talks between City and Madrid broke down, opening the door for Barcelona. Head coach Hansi Flick is understood to have played a decisive role, personally calling Rodri to convince him a move to Camp Nou was the right one and by his own account, it worked.
There’s added spice to the decision given Rodri’s history: Real Madrid boycotted the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony after he beat Vinícius Jr. to the award, a snub that hasn’t been forgotten by fans on either side. Choosing Barcelona over Madrid so soon after that saga has only added to the reaction online.

The Deal in Numbers
Barcelona had two earlier bids for Rodri rejected before finally agreeing a package worth €76.5m, comprising an upfront fee of around €60m with more than €11m in achievable add-ons. Manchester City, who had hoped to tie Rodri to a new contract, ultimately accepted given he had just one year left on his deal and had made his wish to return to Spain clear. Rodri will sign a four-year contract at Barcelona, running until June 2030.
It’s a significant blow for City, who lose a player who made 298 appearances across seven seasons at the Etihad, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League along the way. Manager Enzo Maresca now faces the task of filling what Sky Sports described as “a huge hole” in midfield, with the club already in talks over potential reinforcements.

A Dream Return for Rodri
For Rodri, the timing could hardly be better. He captained Spain to World Cup glory this summer, was named the tournament’s best player, and arrives at Barcelona as arguably the most decorated defensive midfielder in world football today. Injuries disrupted parts of his final two seasons in Manchester, but his form for Spain this summer put those concerns firmly to rest.
Barcelona view the signing as a statement of intent, adding a genuine leader and ball-winner to a squad already being reshaped this summer with the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, and João Cancelo’s return. With Frenkie de Jong facing a lengthy injury layoff, Rodri’s arrival also solves an urgent gap in the middle of the park heading into the new season.
